Recipes to Make Your Own Lip Balm

Lip balms are used a lot during winter, by both men and women, for relief from chapped lips. Many women (and some men) use lip balms everyday to keep their lips moisturized. Use of lip balms before applying a coat of lipstick protects the lips from darkening due to continuous use of lipstick. (Believe me, it works!) There are several variations that you can make, when you make lip balms at home. Soy wax, carnauba wax or candililla wax can be used instead of beeswax. Vaseline is also an excellent alternative to beeswax. Coconut oil, almond oil, jojoba oil, shea butter and cocoa butter can also be added to the lip balm to increase its moisturizing capacity. By adding a little bit of castor oil to your lip balm recipe, you can add a sheen to the lip balm. Natural organic food colors are also great to add colors to the balm. Honey makes your balm sweet; it is okay if you do not want to use it.

For a fruity flavor, you can use essential oils like orange and lemon. You can add the respective food colors to match the flavor. You can make herbal lip balms by using tea tree oil, camphor oil, mint oil and ginger oil depending on your liking. An important thing to remember is that add the essential oil just before transferring the balm into containers so that the oil does not evaporate. These variations will provide you with a variety of options of lip balms for your lip care. If you want to make tinted lip balm, add a small amount of your lipstick to it.
