How to Make a Ribbon Wallet
Although there are many store-bought purses and wallets available in the market in myriad styles and designs, none can match the beauty of a homemade wallet. If you are an avid DIYer, then you must have felt the satisfaction of making something beautiful and unique with your hands. Making wallets, clutches or purses is not very hard and they make wonderful gifts for your friends and family. Wallets can be made out of different materials, like fabric, felt and soft leather. If you have any leftover scraps of ribbons, you can even use them for making a ribbon purse. A colorful handmade ribbon purse will make a wonderful gift for your favorite niece. Here we will give you step-by-step instructions on how to make a wallet using ribbons.
Making a Ribbon Wallet
Things Required
- Assortment of ribbons (in different colors and patterns)
- Fusible interfacing
- Cotton fabric (in a pattern of your choice)
- Lining fabric
- Magnetic clasp
- Pair of scissors
- Rotary cutter
- First, cut the fusible interfacing and the lining fabric into 5'' x 11'' piece dimension with the help of scissors.
- Next, place the fusible interfacing over the lining fabric, making sure that the edges of the fabric and fusible interfacing are aligned properly.
- Place the ribbons over the fusible interfacing in a patchwork pattern. Make sure that you cover the entire surface of the fusible interfacing with the ribbons and there are no gaps in between.
- Once the entire surface of the fusible interfacing has been covered with the scrap ribbons, place a parchment paper over the ribbons and iron on a medium setting.
- This will glue/fuse the ribbons over the lining fabric. Now, trim the excess ribbon hanging out from the edges of the fabric with a rotary cutter.
- In a sewing machine, sew the edges of the ribbon to the fabric.
- Next, cut the cotton fabric into a 4'' x 11'' rectangular piece.
- Sew this cotton fabric, on the inside part of the ribboned fabric on three sides, keeping one of the longer sides unstitched.
- This will create a pocket, for keeping your cash.
- Sew one part of the magnetic clasp on the top inside portion of the wallet. Sew the other part on the bottom outside portion of the wallet.
- Check the alignment of the magnetic clasp before you sew it to make sure that you can snap it to close easily.
- Finally, sew a long piece of ribbon along the edge of the wallet to give the wallet a neat and finished look.
- Tri-fold the wallet and snap the magnetic clasp to close.
- Iron the wallet along the fold and your ribbon wallet is ready!
Simple Ribbon Wallet Tutorial
Things Required
- Clear Tape
- Pair of scissors
- Ribbons (in colors of your choice)
- By using a dollar bill as a template, cut the clear tape in such a way that it is about an inch longer than the length of the dollar bill.
- Cut out more clear tape as required.
- Join the clear tape together to form a rectangular piece, whose dimension is slightly larger than that of the dollar bill.
- Now place the rectangular clear tape on your work table, with its sticky side up.
- Carefully layer the ribbons over the clear tape in a patchwork pattern, crisscross pattern or in neat rows. Make sure that you do this carefully, otherwise it will end up looking messy.
- Trim the excess ribbons from the edges of the rectangular clear tape.
- Now attach another layer of clear tape over the ribbons so that the ribbons are enclosed within the clear tape.
- Make another plastic enclosed ribbon rectangle in the same way.
- Place the two rectangular pieces over one another and join the shorter edges of the rectangle with clear tape.
- Encase one of the longer sides of the rectangle with clear tape so as to make a deep pocket.
- Fold the wallet in half and place your cash inside it.
