Popular Hairstyles of the 1950s
When we think about the word, "retro", we go back at least 50 years back where fashion, music and life was very different. All of us refer to those years as the golden years of the past, which will never fade from the world's memories. Since, we are talking about the 1950s in this article, I would like to tell you that fashion, hairstyles, art, music, interior designs, etc., gained momentum from this decade and Hollywood was a major inspiration for these. Many popular actors and actresses pulled off unique looks in their movies, and their clothing, hairdos, shoes and accessories were imitated by their fans. In the paragraphs below you will read about all the popular hairstyles of the 1950s for women. Hope you enjoy reading about these classic hairdos from the past.
Popular Women's Hairstyles in the 50s
Unlike the other retro decades, the specialty of these 10 years was that curls were a huge hit among the ladies! Most of the hairstyles for women included different types of curls or were a combination of straight and curly hair. With their A-line, puff sleeved cocktail dresses, women liked to wear curly up dos or plain ponytails curled from the edges. Here's an account of some of the best 50s hairdos which were extremely popular among women in those days.
Winged Coiffette
As mentioned above, curls were the most popular during the 50s, and the Winged Coiffette was a great example of this. The hairstyle includes a simple wavy fringe in the front of the head, with voluminous hair gathered at the back. The back hair was usually back-combed to make it look voluminous, along with tight curls around the sides of the head. The curls could be held in place with hairspray and this hairstyle was known to be a very formal one. The Winged Coiffette was usually worn by women with shoulder or neck length hair.
Bouffant
Do you remember the stylish bouffant worn by the First Lady Jackie Kennedy, where she flaunted curly bangs on her forehead? Even though it shot up to popularity in the 50s, the bouffant was a fancy hairstyle that could be worn on both formal and casual occasions. It is characterized by a part of the hair piled up on the top of the head, and the rest of the hair hanging on the sides of the head. The piled up hairdo is made by tying a ponytail in that section, back-combing it and then making a puff out of it to hold with pins. There are either curly or straight bangs let on the forehead. This hairstyle was made into an updo too.
Rockabilly Hairstyle
This hairstyle was more dominant in the 1930s and 40s, but found popularity in the 50s. During those days, young women flaunted a Rockabilly hairstyle when they went out clubbing, or to a picnic. It looked very cute when the upper front of the hair was pulled up and pin up curled into a main round curl. The sides of the hair were combed straight and greased with gel so that the hairstyle looks perfect. The edges of the back hair was curled and given a slight bump. The latter hair could also be tied or pinned up in a French twist.
Besides these hairdos, other classic hairstyles that were popular in the 50s include;
- Beehive Hairstyle
- Ponytails
- Pin up Curls
- French Pleats
- Bubble Cuts
- Soft Bob
- SwirlaWave
- New Wave
