First of all, if you think dress patterns, formal dress patterns that is, have to be tea length or reaching the ankles, you can't be further away from the truth. These days, looking sexy, even at formal events like a wedding, reception, prom, or office parties, is very much in. While I have nothing against tea length dresses, I'm just giving you a broad idea of what you can wear to such events. Being presentable is everything and knowing how to carry yourself in any dress takes skill. But depending on the kind of event you're going to attend, proper dress code needs to be followed. For an office event, the party dress code will be different from let's say, a wedding event. But for the sake of this article, let's look at some formal dress patterns that you would wear to a wedding.
Dress Patterns for a Formal Party
As a guest to a wedding or reception, going to your prom, or attending a formal cocktail party, the choices for daytime or evening dress patterns are many. All you have to do is search at the right places. So before you hit the mall and try on any of the patterns, let's see what you should be searching for exactly.
As far as dress patterns, formal dress patterns are concerned, there are 5 different patterns you can choose from regardless of your body type. Now don't get me wrong here; I am not saying that all these patterns will suit every body type because dressing for your body type is essential. What I mean is, these 5 patterns will give you a little bit of variety to choose from. So first, we will see which pattern suits a particular body type. This way, you can easily choose a formal party dress for yourself.

Empire formal dresses are perfect for proms and cocktail parties. The dress has a high waist line, typically below the bust. These dress patterns, formal dress patterns work as a camouflage for those who are bottom-heavy. So if you are searching for formal dress patterns in plus size, empire plus size formal dresses are the way to go.
Halter
You have tons of choices for fabric, design, and colors when it comes to halter tops. A great dress pattern that helps you show off your features, especially if you have wide shoulders. A cute little black dress or a vintage dress, halter tops will be the right choice.
Princess Gown
Imagine long, flowing dresses made for a princess. Alright let's not go too deep into that. But I guess you have an idea as to what I'm talking about. You can choose princess style evening dress to wear to a wedding or a prom. The top of the dress can be either an off the shoulders, a halter, or spaghetti straps. The choices are endless with these gowns.
Sheath
Last, but certainly not the least in our list of dress patterns; formal dress patterns for hourglass and tall, slender, and slim girls, sheath dresses are perfect. These evening dresses make your waist look slimmer, but still giving it a beautiful curve. The hemline stays just below the knees to give this dress a classic look.
