Organic Maltodextrin
Maltodextrin is creamy-white, hygroscopic or moisture absorbing and spray drying powder. Commonly used as food additive and sweetener, maltodextrin is a member of the dextrin. Maltodextrin is a compound of polysaccharide and hence, it is a long chain carbohydrate. Maltodextrin is produced by the process of partial hydrolysis of starch. It is one of the rapidly digestible glucose and has a moderately sweet (almost bland) taste. Since it is obtained from starch hydrolysis, it can be derived from a variety of natural sources of starch. Some of the most common food sources that are used for producing maltodextrin are corn, potatoes, wheat, rice, etc. When maltodextrin is derived from organically grown products, it is called organic maltodextrin. Since there are least chances of contamination involved in its preparation process, organic type of maltodextrin is considered as the best source of maltodextrin. Let's learn more about it, in the following section of the article.
Uses of Organic Maltodextrin
As mentioned above, maltodextrin which is generally available on the market is derived from several organic sources of starch like potato, corn, rice and other organic sources of starch like cassava. Most of maltodextrin which is present in the US is derived from corn, while in UK, organic wheat maltodextrin is the most popular option. Belonging to the rapidly digestible group of carbohydrates, maltodextrin creates least number of health related issues as compared to its counterparts. Secondly, calorie count of maltodextrin is extremely low (1 gm = 4 calories). It is the biggest reason why maltodextrin has numerous applications in varied fields. For instance, as a texturizer, crystallization inhibitor, thickening agent, sweetener, etc.
The biggest use of organic type of maltodextrin is made in the field of food preservation and food packaging industry, where it is used as a popular food additive. Its low calorie content makes maltodextrin a healthier sugar substitute. It means, maltodextrin can be used in drinks and beverage like protein shakes, teas and coffees. Maltodextrin is found effective for weight loss and diabetes. It is also found effective for weight gain, bodybuilding and muscle building and hence is widely used by people who wish to gain tout body. Organic type of maltodextrin is also used in packaging process of ketchups, powdered soups, baby food, candies, spices and other beverages and confectioneries.
Side Effects
Now that you know what organic maltodextrin powder is, and its uses, it is important to find out about its side effects. There is a state of debate when it comes to determination of organic nature of maltodextrin. Some people say that maltodextrin is organic while the rest of them claim that it is not. In terms of chemistry, maltodextrin is organic when it is derived from organic good. But since you need to process products to gain maltodextrin, it can't be called an organic product. Keeping aside this issue, many experts have discussed and tested maltodextrin dangers with genuine concern. These dangers are evident in case of overdose or constant overuse of products that contain maltodextrin in any amount. These side effects of maltodextrin range from mild to severe in nature. Since maltodextrin is a glucose (carb), it mainly affects the digestive system and excretory system.
The biggest side effect of maltodextrin is allergy which is evident in people who already suffer with starch intolerance. People who suffer with celiac disease are also likely to suffer with skin allergies like itching and hives. Some other prime side effects of maltodextrin include, bloating, flatulence, constipation, diarrhea, lack of appetite, fatigue, weight loss or weight gain, etc. Rebound hypoglycemia is also a side effect of maltodextrin, which is especially experienced by bodybuilders. Overuse of maltodextrin also causes fluctuations in insulin levels. Incidences of tooth decay and such dental problems are also noted as maltodextrin side effects.
This is the reason why organic maltodextrin should be consumed in moderate quantities only. Now as a parting note, all that I can advise is to consult your health care provider prior to consuming maltodextrin or any such food additives! Take care!
