Mashed Potatoes Calories

Calorie conscious people, opting for weight loss diets, are always worried about the calories in potatoes. There are different types of potatoes available in the market. Russets are starchy potatoes which have high starch and low water. If you want potatoes for baking or for French fries, these russets or starchy potatoes are great. They are good as mashed potatoes too. They disintegrate, when cooked in water while they become crumbly and fluffy when cooked by dry heat. Yukon Golds, having medium starch and medium water, can be called all-purpose or chef's potatoes. They are great in mashed potatoes, soups, stews and they also can be roasted nicely. They don't dry out when baked and they are moist and fluffy, within a few minutes, when cooked. They maintain most of their shape in soups.

These days, frozen or dehydrated mashed potatoes are easily available in the supermarkets. Mashed potatoes are also known as 'whipped potatoes'. Freshly boiled potatoes can be whipped with a hand beater. You may add butter, vegetable oil, milk or cream to enhance the flavor and texture of whipped potatoes. You may add finely ground garlic, spring onion, sour cream, egg yolk, healthy herbs like parsley, rosemary, white turnip, or wasabi, bacon, cheese, etc. to these potatoes. Spices like mustard, nutmeg, chili pepper, etc. help enhance the flavor and taste of the dish.
