How to Tease Your Hair


While many people must be thinking that teased hair or large hair is out of fashion, giant wigs and towering beehive that enjoyed several waves of popularity in 50s and 80s have staged a grand comeback. Teasing hair or back combing is an art of combing or brushing hair towards the root to small tangles that hold the hair in place. However, people usually think teasing hair at home is time-consuming and difficult, but actually it is not so. If done properly, it adds life and volume to any hairstyle and make the hair look heavy and puffy. But if not done properly, teasing can cause severe hair damage. Therefore, here are some easy instructions, that will give you that bouffant and beehive hair look of 80s.

Teasing Without Hairstyle

If you want to tease your hair to have that puffy hair look without any specific hairstyle, following are the steps to be followed.

  • A blow dryer
  • A flat iron
  • A brush
  • A rattail or metal comb
  • Hair clips
  • Hairspray

  • Wash your hair properly and once dry, straighten them by blow-drying and flat ironing wavy or curly locks.
  • Brush your hair properly to remove all tangles and don't try to style them as teasing hair with texture may tangle or damage it. So wait until hair is completely cool.
  • To create volume at the crown, with a comb, split the hair into two-inch sections at the crown and clip the rest back out of the way. If the hair are too silky, spritz a little hairspray on the sections to be teased.
  • To back comb the hair, use one hand to hold the section straight up in the air. Using other hand, comb downward near the roots in short strokes and repeat in a section just below this one for an extra oomph. For this, you can also use a flat-backed brush in place of comb.
  • Finally, smooth the teased sections lightly with the brush and use hairspray to keep your hairstyle in place.
Teasing in a Ponytail

Things Required
  • A 1" round Marilyn brush
  • Hair elastic that matches hair color
  • Styling cream or hair gel
  • Hair clips

  • This style goes well with unwashed hair or 2 - 3 days old hair.
  • To create the right hair texture, use a styling cream or spray gel on your hair. But if your hair previously have a lot of product in them, just wet hands and lightly run through hair to reactivate the product.
  • Take the 1" round Marilyn brush in one hand and holding hair with other hand, tease them all over, focusing more on the crown of your head and the bangs.
  • Now flip your head upside down and spritz some hairspray all over them.
  • Carefully gather your hair into a ponytail and holding the pony in one hand, slowly tame the flyaways on top of your head with the Marilyn brush.
  • Finally secure pony with the hair elastic and finger sculpt, any loose hair around you face, or tuck it behind your ear. Spray a light mist of hairspray to keep your hairstyle in place.
