How to Become a Fashion Designer
College Degree
A fashion designer has to have a degree in fashion or styling from any fashion school. There are various aspects of fashion that one can major in. For instance, if you graduate with a degree of fashion business, marketing, or fashion merchandising, you still stand a chance to be a designer. A degree gives your nascent mind an idea of what the seamless industry beholds for you and it is, in a way an entry ticket for getting a job with a fashion house. However, much of excelling as a fashion designer depends on individual abilities and aspirations.
Stitch in Time
A stitch in time does save time, if not a nine. Any fashion designer will tell you that, it is important to learn sewing if you aim to be a fashion designer. This will give you the real experience of stitching clothes. This way you can also sew your own clothes, till you find a tailor who understands your designs. Learning how to sew teaches many aspects of designing and various ways in which the same fabric can be stitched for a new outfit.
Serious Sketching
Learn the art of sketching to understand the flow of a fabric. The same fabric can be draped and worn in various different ways. Sketching will give you an insight of a myriad drapes, shapes and ways in which the same fabric can be used. Join a drawing class to perfect your sketches and to get better at drawing body proportions. Research various fashion magazines to see what kind of styles look good on tall and slim models and what looks better on short ones. A sketch is worth a thousand words, for it definitely explains the design better than explaining the same verbally.
Draping It
Draping your designs is the most important part of being a fashion designer. To learn this art, get yourself a mannequin, so that you can pin-up as and when required, to know that your outfit is following the measured body proportions. If your drapes are better than sketches, then take a few shots and include them in your portfolio.
Sew for Others
A fashion designer creates designs, so that others can wear them to make a style statement. Once you learn how to sketch, sew and drape, make clothes for other people. See how your designs will be liked in reality and how a simple alteration can make it a perfect fit for a customer. Begin with making clothes for your family members and yourself. If people like what you are wearing, they will definitely want to know from where you go it. Use this chance to advertise via word of mouth to tap some fashion conscious clientele.
Being a fashion designer requires an eye for detail and a mind that can break conventional thinking. Leave your idiosyncrasies about certain colors and fabrics aside while designing clothes. Play with your colors, fabrics, designs, moods and a millions other hues to make your clothes differently. With an abundant resource of inspiration, a designer can only call his imagination, his limit.
