Amazon Kindle 3 Review
With so many e-book readers to choose from, each boasting of being better than the other, making a choice is no doubt difficult. One of the most heard about battle in the tech arena today is that of the Kindle, Nook and the iPad. If you have also narrowed down your search to these three e-book readers, you can go ahead and slash Apple iPad from your list. That's because Apple iPad is a full-fledged tablet PC, and not a dedicated e-book reader like Amazon Kindle or Barnes and Noble Nook. You should only go for an iPad if you are on a look out for a tablet PC with e-book reading facility or if you happen to be an ardent fan of brand Apple. If not, going with Kindle 3 or Nook would be a wise thing to do. But Kindle 3 or Nook? Making a choice is still not easy, but going through the reviews of these gadgets can be of some help.
Kindle 3 Specifications
The latest offering from online retail giant - Amazon, the 3rd generation Kindle seems to be quite promising than its predecessors. More popular as Kindle 3, it is available in two versions - Kindle 3 Wi-Fi only and Kindle 3 Wi-Fi+3G. The Wi-Fi only model - which connects to the Internet via Wi-Fi networks, is priced at US$139. While the Wi-Fi+3G model - with its dual connectivity, is priced at US$189. You also have two colors to choose from - classic white and graphite. The third generation Kindle is 0.5 inches short and narrow than its predecessor - Kindle 2. Both models boast of the new E ink "Pearl" display which is known for its excellent contrast ratio. Amazon has also switched the battery to a new 1750 mAh lithium polymer battery. For Wi-Fi connectivity, Kindle 3 relies on Atheros AR6102G 802.11bg Wi-Fi chip and for 3G connectivity it relies on AnyDATA DTP-600W 3G GSM modem. Yet another noteworthy attribute is the increase in memory to 4GB/3GB.
Kindle 3 Review
With all these tech specs, Kindle 3 e-book reader does look quite promising in itself. The fact that Kindle 3 is 0.5 inches shorter and narrower than it predecessor makes it 15 percent lighter - all of which adds to the portability factor and makes it even more easy to handle. You have the facility of accessing Internet on Kindle 3 via public as well as private Wi-Fi networks or through 3G connection (latter in case of Wi-Fi + 3G model.) This dual connectivity gives it an edge over Sony Reader which has no Internet connectivity options. The increase in memory to 3GB/4GB means you get to store more e-books than ever before, around 3500 to be precise. The new display also reduces reflection and makes it easier for the user to use Kindle 3 outdoors. The new 1750 mAh lithium polymer battery is more efficient than the one used in its predecessor. If you don't resort to Wi-Fi, you can use Kindle 3 for anywhere between 15 days to an entire month on a single charge.
Even though Kindle 3 display size is same as it was before at 6 inches, the new e-ink pearl display does add a new dimension by making it easier for you to read continuously without straining your eyes. If the experts at Amazon are to be believed, the new display has 50 percent better contrast as compared to Kindle 2 - a difference which is quite obvious when you compare the two side by side. Even the fonts are darker and crisper which add to readability of Kindle 3. A comparison of Kindle 3 and Nook also reveals that the page turn rate of Kindle is faster as compared to the latter. That being said, one of the most prominent factor which works in favor of Kindle 3 is the drop in price. At US$189, the new Kindle is far cheaper as compared to its previous version Kindle 2 which was initially priced at a whopping US$359. At the end of the day, both Kindle 3 versions priced at US$189 and US$139 respectively are affordable to people with average income.
A closer look at the Kindle-Nook comparison, and you realize that the price difference between the two is mere US$10. With this negligible price difference, you are left with no option but to compare their features if you are to find out which is the best electronic book reader of the two.
