What is a Mood Ring?
To put it simply, a mood ring is a type of ring that contains something known as a thermochromic element. A thermochromic element imparts its ability, of changing colors with a change in the temperature, to a substance. Most mood rings contain thermochromic elements, in the form of a liquid crystal. Therefore, when the ring is worn by someone, it changes colors depending upon the body temperature of the wearer. Since the changes in moods result in a variation in body temperature, it is said that the ring reflects the mood of the wearer. Changes in body temperature occurs many times due to changes in emotions. The sensitive liquid inside the liquid crystal changes its molecular structure, which changes the wavelength of light reflected or absorbed by light. The liquid crystals are mostly coated with a plastic or glass dome. However, the high-quality mood rings are sealed neatly to prevent any water seeping in the crystal.

How does a Mood Ring Work?
The working of a mood ring is simple. The stones that mood rings contain are one of the two types. It is either a clear glass stone, mounted on top of a sheet of liquid crystals, or a hollow glass shell that is filled with thermochromic liquid crystals. The thermochromic liquid crystals are sensitive to temperature variations and their changed molecular structure, affects the light wavelengths absorbed and reflected by the crystals. Hence, the change in color is reflected by the mood rings. Depending on the body heat conducted by mood ring, the liquid crystals twist to reflect a portion of the color spectrum. As you can see on the left the color spectrum is shown. On the left all the rainbow colors are shown which from top are violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red. In the middle is green color, which signifies balance or ideal body temperature. Hence, many times green color observed on a wearer indicate that the wearer is in a balanced state.

Mood Rings & ChakrasAs many people know there are 7 chakras in the body. These seven chakras are the most recognized ones in the East. Each chakra is associated with a particular color. Hence, when a particular color appears on the mood ring it can indicate from which chakra a person is functioning. So, one way of reading the color on the mood ring is to associate with chakras. These colors of chakras can be observed on the picture on the right. The violet color can be identified with wisdom, while the indigo color of the second chakra can be associated with balanced state of mind. The blue color of the third chakra is identified with power to verbalize, while the center chakra which is represented by green color shows heart consciousness. The next is yellow color of the solar plexus chakra, which shows digestion or positive use of personal power. Orange chakra represents seeking self-nature, and red color which is the lower most chakra means arousal. However, there can be shades of these colors which can represent a different meaning altogether. Here is a chart explaining the various emotions that a color or shade can represent.
