In such auctions too, the minimum bid amount is set and the bidders have to bid higher than that. Once the envelopes are collected, obviously the person who has bid the highest gets the item. A silent auction is also much more gentle and sophisticated that the usual auction where people have to raise their hands and shout out the bid amount. A silent auction also provides a bidder with a lot of time to think about the item which does not happen during usual auctions, where bidders are found to bid on impulse. But this point could be disadvantageous for the organizers as it could lead to lower bids where people would think carefully and critically about the item and end up knowing its uselessness or usefulness.
