How to Save a Wet Cell Phone

Human beings can get pretty clumsy sometimes, and on some occasions certain circumstances are just out of our control. Either way, if you accidentally dropped your mobile phone in water, you will need a prompt answer to this question.

Once water enters the electronic compartment inside, the damage can be deep and permanent. In all likelihood, you will have to discard the cell phone altogether. This becomes more of a problem for people who own expensive smartphones.

First Steps

The very first thing that you need to do is get the phone out of water and open it up as much as you possibly can. This involves opening the back panel, removing the cell phone battery, the SIM card and the memory card. Place all these objects, (including the device), in front of a table fan, a heater or in the sun. You will need to leave these objects to dry out for a few hours before you can think of checking the device again. Water can be extremely hard to get rid of once it enters the system, and this drying out process is something that you have to undertake.

You cannot think about saving a wet cell phone without first ensuring that the water has left the system completely. You must also remember that the battery of the phone is the most important part, and you must do all that you can to keep the battery dry. A wet battery can damage the entire electronic mechanism, if it is not fixed dried immediately.

Other Considerations

In some cases, the effects of this will not be evident at first. This will result in you feeling that there is absolutely nothing wrong with the device. But sooner or later, some connections and circuits will suffer as a result of this moisture's presence. You must also remember to not leave the phone out for too long under the sun. This can damage the screen of your device. Placing the phone on a towel or a cloth will also reduce the risk of heat damage from surface contact.

Some people also suggest that you can freeze the phone for about 15-20 minutes. This is a fairly strange solution, but surprisingly, it is one that works. Putting the phone in the freezer for a while will freeze up the water inside, and this reduces the electrical conductivity of the water molecules since their surface area is larger after freezing. If you try this out, you should wrap the phone in about 2 layers of cloth before putting it inside the freezer. Electrical components do not usually get adversely affected by cold temperatures, so this will not harm your smartphone.

One problem may arise when you take the phone out of the freezer and the water thaws and spreads elsewhere. This is something that is out of your control, so there is not much you can do to prevent it. So if you are still wondering about it, we recommend you remove the battery and other things and place the phone out to dry, and then place it inside the freezer for a few minutes.

If your phone is still not working after all this, you need to visit a mobile repair store. They will charge you quite a bit of money, and will also keep you waiting for a few days. That is if the phone can be saved at all. If they cannot give you more ways, it is probably best to go ahead and replace it. And be more careful the next time.
