How to Repair a Water Damaged Phone


If you are as clumsy as yours truly, then at some point of time or the other, you may have dropped your phone into a water body, unwittingly. It is not something that you would have wanted to do, obviously, but it is something that can cause a lot of grief. If you have, once again managed to water log your phone, then before cursing everyone on the planet, and condemning your stupidity, learn to repair your phone. The steps given in this article will help you restore your phone to working condition so that you do not have to spend big bucks on getting the cell phone repaired, or buying a new phone.

Reviving your Water Damaged Cell Phone

If you have just dropped your phone into a water source or a container of water then the first thing that you need to do is to obviously remove it from the source of water. Without ceasing the contact between the device and the source of water, it is impossible that you will be able to fix the phone. Next you will need to remove the batter of the phone. This step is of extreme importance as it is essential that you cut off the source of power to the phone, to restrict further damage to the circuits in the phone. If you want to check the extent of damage to the phone, then you will need to check the corner in the area where the battery is placed. If the white square or circle in the area is showing traces of pink or red, then chances are that your phone is severely water damaged. To revive a phone damaged by water, you will then need to remove the SIM card and other peripheral accessories. It is important that you remove any covers or external connectors and open up as many slots and crevices in the device as possible.

For repairing the phone, the next thing that you will need to do is dry the phone. Do this by first wiping off any traces of water with a soft towel. Try to shake off any water that may have entered the phone. If using a tissue paper, avoid over wiping with wet paper. This may cause remnants of the tissue paper to stick to the cell phone. You can also use cleaning alcohol to wipe the phone as this will displace the water. While most people may advise the use of a blow dryer to fix a wet phone, use a vacuum cleaner. It will suck away any liquid that exists in the inner parts of the phone. Hold it over affected areas for about twenty minutes or so, and you should be able to completely dry out the phone. You can also choose to leave the phone in a bowl of uncooked rice overnight to draw out any moisture remnant, if the water has not drained out completely. It is important that you switch on the phone only twenty four hours after the water has been drained completely.

There are other methods that you can use to ensure that your phone is not completely damaged by water. One of them would be to immerse the cell phone, after removing all the peripherals and accessories, in a container of cleaning alcohol. This will displace any water that is in the device. Soak the cell phone for about five minutes or so, and then use Q tips to clean the phone completely. This should help dry the phone out. Fixing water damaged phones can be quite a pain but it is not that difficult. If after trying these methods, your phone has still not been resuscitated, then it may be time to either give it to an authorized dealer who can fix the problem, or may be just buy a new phone.
