Cake Mascara

One of the most important elements of eye makeup is the mascara, and you dare not forget to apply it if you want your eyelashes to look stunning! Ever since we know, mascaras have been available in liquid forms so that they can be applied evenly and they stick to the eyelashes firmly. But did you know, that the earliest forms of mascara were powdered or cake mascaras? They were dry and cake like which were applied with a pinch of water is added. Unlike the recent liquid mascaras, these were simply applied with the help of a cake mascara brush. However, a few makeup brands still produce these cake mascaras, some of which are organic and can be used in place of chemical cosmetics.

Powdered Mascara Cake

Even though most women find it simpler to use the liquid mascaras as there are a number of advantages to them, there are a few who prefer using the powdered ones. The specialty of a cake mascara is that it accentuates the dark and thick eyelashes, more than the liquid ones in eye makeup. It is also found that cake mascaras were made at home in the ancient times. Some of the top names in the list of such mascara brands are Longcils Boncza Cosmetique, Paula Dorf and Isadora. Many companies go for herbal ingredients in making cake mascaras to avoid harmful effects of chemicals on the eyes.

  • Plastic spoon or spatula
  • Provitamin B5
  • Stearic acid
  • Water
  • Xanthan gum
Directions
To start with this recipe, you will need to first collect the above mentioned ingredients and then mix them appropriately. First of all, in a glass container filled with 2.4 oz distilled water, add 1/8 teaspoon xanthan gum, 1 teaspoon glycerin, 1 teaspoon gum arabic and 12 drops of provitamin B5. Mix all the ingredients by stirring the mixture with a plastic spoon. This is your "mixture 1". In a sauce pan, add water and keep a glass container in it. Then add the 2 teaspoon stearic acid, teaspoon ceteareth-20, teaspoon candelilla wax, 0.2 oz. beeswax and 0.1 oz. carnauba wax to the container and heat. Keep the temperature constant to 167 degrees F.

To make one of the best mascaras, in another bowl, whisk 1 tablespoon of iron oxide black and teaspoon cyclo-dimethicone, then add this to the above mixture and stir on low heat. This is your "mixture 2". Now again take a sauce pan and add water to it, place the container with mixture 1 and keep on low heat. Then to this, add the mixture 2 gently and maintain a temperature of 158 degrees F. Stir the mixture well for 2 minutes and then remove from heat to let it cool. Add 23 drops of paraben-DU and mix it well. Then pour it in the mascara containers with the help of a pipette, and let it dry.

Organic Cake Mascara
The cake mascara prepared using chemical ingredients should not be used very regularly as it might damage your eyelashes in the long run. However, there are other herbal ingredients which you can use to prepare an organic cake mascara. The procedure to be followed is the same, but for the addition of ingredients like; pure water, beeswax, organic oils of sunflower, rose hip seed, primrose, hydrogenated palm kernel glycerides, organic rose extract in food-grade ethyl alcohol, organic mixed tocopherols, rose wax, food-grade xanthan gum, etc. A number of these organic preparations use natural ingredients instead of chemical ones in their products.

Tips to Apply Mascara
Since you are using cake mascara, you will need a brush for application. Take a small amount of the mascara on a brush and dust it back in the container. Then close your eyes and brush off this mascara on the direction opposite to that of your eyelashes. Since you are not applying the liquid one, there are chances, the powdered mascara might not stay intact, so you can use little water while applying it. Let the eyelashes dry for and then open your eyes. You will get a lovely layer of mascara on your lashes.

That would be all for my two cents on how powdered mascara can be and why it is preferred over liquid mascara. Makeup professionals prefer using these mascaras as they give your eyes a dusty look and add to them, an element of glamor!
