How to Make Dry Shampoo
You might have heard about dry shampoo that is available in drug stores. Some of you might have used such products. It is nothing other than a replacement for liquid shampoo and is mostly used in situations, when using the latter is almost impossible. It can be of great help, if you cannot wash your hair, due to lack of time, water or for any other reason. Even though, various brands of dry shampoo are now available in drugstores, you may not have it at home, when it is needed urgently. In such cases, you can make your own dry shampoo at home.
What is Dry Shampoo
Traditionally, washing hair with shampoo means use of liquid shampoo to clean the grease and dirt from hair. At times, such washing may not be possible, for various reasons. During such times, you can use a dry shampoo, which does not need water. A dry shampoo is nothing but dry powder that can be applied on hair, for removing grease and dirt, without actually washing the hair with water. All you have to do is to spray the powder on hair, apply it on the scalp and hair (as if you do in case of a liquid shampoo) and brush it out. Even though, it may not be as effective as liquid shampoos, dry shampoo can be a real boon at times.
It has been observed that most people store a can of dry shampoo at home, for emergency use. You may purchase one that is best suited for your hair. It will be better to go through dry shampoo reviews, for choosing the right type. Even if you don't have one, you can make dry shampoo at home, with some easily available materials.
Homemade Dry Shampoo
If you are in a real hurry and don't have a store-bought dry shampoo, then you can prepare a homemade one with some of the easily available ingredients. Various types of dry shampoos can be made with different ingredients. These include oatmeal, cornmeal, cornstarch, white flour, dry clay, baby powder, talcum powder, arrowroot powder, etc. While any one of these ingredients can be used as a dry shampoo, some people prefer two of them together, for maximum effectiveness. For example, cornmeal and cornstarch are found to be a good combination.
Use Oatmeal
Oatmeal is one of the ideal materials for making dry shampoo. While, two tablespoons of ground oatmeal is sufficient for a single use, a mixture of ground oatmeal and baking soda is said to be better. In order to prepare this dry shampoo, take equal amounts of both ingredients and mix them well. While, oatmeal is good for absorbing grease and dirt, baking soda can absorb odors too.
Cornmeal/Cornstarch
Cornmeal or cornstarch can be used as such or in combination with other ingredients. You may also use a mixture of both in equal amounts, to make dry shampoo. Some people use a mixture of salt grains (one tablespoon) and half a cup of cornmeal as dry shampoo. Another method is to combine one tablespoon of oatmeal with equal amount of finely ground almonds and a teaspoon of orris root. This dry shampoo is ideal for those with oily hair.
Talcum Powder and Clay
Dry clay is said to be a good absorbent of oil and dirt and so, is used as dry shampoo. Mostly, white clay, green clay, etc., are used for this purpose. You may also add a small amount of powdered milk to dry clay, so that your gets shinier, after applying this dry shampoo. Even talcum powder and baby powder can be used as dry shampoo. You may also add a small amount of baking soda to this mixture, for better results.
All you have to do is to apply it on hair and scalp, as in case of liquid shampoo and wait for a few minutes, before removing the powder by brushing. But, dark-haired people must take some extra efforts to remove the white powder properly. For dark hair, you may use cocoa powder, instead of other white powders. It is also said that using oatmeal flour and wheat flour, as dry shampoo is beneficial for increasing the volume of the hair. You may also add a few drops of essential oil to the dry shampoo, for some fragrance.
So, try these recipes and find out the best dry shampoo for your hair. However, dry shampoo should be used sparingly, as it may not be as effective as liquid ones in cleaning the hair. Apart from that, long-term use of may also leave a residue on your hair as well as scalp. So, you may use homemade dry shampoos in emergency situations only.
