Gluten-free Alcoholic Beverages
Note - This article is for informational purposes only. If you are a celiac or gluten intolerant, consult your doctor before consuming any alcoholic beverages that may or may not contain gluten.
Before we learn about the various alcoholic beverages which are gluten-free you can have, let's go over the concept of what gluten really is. Basically, gluten is available after processing wheat, barley, corn, oats, and rye. It is a protein composite which makes the dough stretchy, helps it to change form, gives it a flexible texture, and assists it to rise. We eat gluten-based foods everyday, but this isn't the case with some people. Those who suffer from celiac disease, people who can't tolerate gluten in their diet, have a tough time choosing the right alcoholic beverages for themselves. Or do they?
Many experts believe that after the distillation process, the proteins which are found in certain alcoholic beverages are removed. However, different companies which make these spirits can opt to include or refrain from adding gluten in them. Certain spirits like beer, Bourbon, whiskey, liqueurs, and pre-mixed drinks, do contain some percentage of gluten. Hence, it is important that you find out whether or not a particular alcohol has gluten or not. Now that we know what is gluten, let's go over the list of gluten-free alcoholic drinks, and some recipes.
Gluten-free Drinks You Can Enjoy
People who are gluten intolerant will be happy to know that there are many alcoholic beverages that are made without any grain (wheat, barley, corn, oats, or rye); and that's what we will discuss in this article. Apart from the spirits' list given below, The National Institutes of Health claims that after the spirits are distilled, it helps remove the gluten protein molecules. However, the distillation process has to be done properly and for certain amount of times. Only then can you be sure that the beverage is absolutely gluten-free.
