How to Clean Kitchen Sink

No one likes a dirty sink. The sight of stagnant pools of water and leftover food particles, stray roaches scuttling over the sink pipes and dirty dishes, then disappearing into the drain - paints a rather disgusting picture, doesn't it? A clean kitchen sink not only looks good, but is one of the most important factors in maintaining hygiene. A clean sink will curb the growth of insects and rodents and therefore control illnesses and diseases. Therefore a clean sink should not be an option, but a compulsion. Moving on to the more important question - how does one go about cleaning the kitchen sink? Let us tell you exactly how in the following section.

Cleaning Kitchen Sink

A thorough cleaning of kitchen sink can be undertaken like so:

  • Remove all the dishes from inside the sink.
  • If there are any containers or the soap dish on the counters then put that aside as well.
  • Once the sink is cleared of all the clutter, use water and splash on all sides to clear it of any stray particles.
  • Then take a scrub brush, pour some dish wash liquid or detergent on it and give the sink a thorough scrubbing on all sides. This will remove the layers of accumulated dirt and food on it.
  • Then take a lemon peel and apply baking soda on it. Go about cleaning the sink by rubbing the rind all over it. Cleaning kitchen sink with baking soda and lime will get rid of all the stains.
  • Take a scrub brush and clean the faucets, taps and counters as well.
  • In case of mineral deposit formations on the kitchen faucet, take some paper towels, soak them in vinegar and then wrap them around the faucets. Let it stay for 50 minutes or so. This will get rid of the deposits and leave the faucets shiny.
  • Clean the garbage disposal by putting a few tablespoons of baking soda down the drain followed by 3 ice cubes. Then turn on the garbage disposal and run the hot water while it works.
  • Once this preliminary stage of cleaning is done, then clean the sink more thoroughly with a cleaning solution.
  • Cleaning products should be chosen on the basis of the material of the sink. Different cleaners are made for different types of sinks. You cannot use a stainless steel sink cleaner for a porcelain sink.
  • Once the sink is cleaned with a cleaner, wash it with water to remove all traces of the cleaning solution.
  • Then dry with a towel. And return the things to their original places.
  • The final step is to soak a towel or sponge with pure vinegar and run it over the counter and sink. This will not only disinfect it but also leave it shiny.
Cleaning Kitchen Sink Drain
  • Whenever you feel the first signs of a blocked drain, run some hot water through it. This will eliminate the build up and odor in the drain.
  • For more heavy builds, clean the kitchen sink with baking soda. Pour 1 teaspoon of it down the drain and then cup of lemon juice. Alternately, vinegar can also be used. Let this solution sit for 30 minutes. After which, run hot water through the sink.
  • Any commercial drain cleaner can also be used in case there is a complete drain blockage or to clean the kitchen sink. Choose the product carefully, after checking for compatibility with your sink.
  • From time to time pour some salt water solution down the drain. This will help to control the grease buildup and stop the odors as well.
  • Always hire a plumber if the clogging is severe and cannot be solved by these methods. There is a possibility that there is some major plumbing work that needs to be undertaken for it, which is best done by a plumber.
Cleaning Kitchen Sink Pipes

Cleaning kitchen sink pipes can get very tricky because you cannot access them from the surface. Here are a few ways by which you can learn how to clean kitchen sink pipes effectively.
  • First of all rinse the sink and then drain it.
  • Then start by disconnecting all the pipes. This can be done by hand also.
  • Let the water that is collected in the pipes drain out fully.
  • Then take the pipes and soak them in a solution of water and mild detergent.
  • After 10-15 minutes of soaking, scrub the pipes with a brush and get rid of all the grime, grease and dust build up.
  • Run these under the water to wash them clean.
