Matte Nail Polish

A glossy, pleasantly colored nail polish is what all of us desire during our manicure session. But what if I told you that a chalky, lackluster nail polish in dull colors like gray and black would rule the roost in nail grooming industry? I am sure most of you would dismiss the idea of getting your nails painted in such hideous colors. However, some daring and enterprising folks wouldn't mind giving this new crazy trend a try. So, this article is for people who are super excited about getting their nails painted in something that looks pretty much like a paint primer and gives their nails a dirty and dead appearance. The rest of you can go back to your ultra shiny nail polish in overly girly colors.

What is Matte Nail Polish

Matte nail polish was first introduced in market in 1992. It was an instant hit amongst grunge wannabes and whacky teenagers. However, soon after its launch the trend bit the dust (I wonder why!). It made a grand comeback in the autumn of 2009 when OPI launched their line of matte nail varnishes. Several other cosmetic giants followed suit and thus began a crazy new nail trend. Shiny, healthy looking nails painted in soft feminine colors went quickly out of fashion and were replaced by colors such as gray, dark purple, red and black. All these colors were devoid of any gloss or shine.

Fortunately, the trend is now limited to only a handful of people who hate to do anything that can be remotely linked to normal behavior. The rest quickly resorted to traditional glossy nail colors. Having said that, I do not wish to ridicule the taste of those who are in favor of this trend. After all, it must be really boring to apply same colors on your nails for years. Matte nail polish instantly makes your nails stand out from others, due to their bold and listless look. This nail polish is more suitable for short nails than longer ones. Long nails can look horrible in such dark colors.

Earlier, nail polish with matte look could not be worn with oil based creams and moisturizers. But that problem has been resolved now with the help of a rubberized base coat. This base coat is sold separately, and is to be applied prior to the nail polish. While applying matte nail polish, apply the second coat within a minute of applying first coat. The top coat is certainly not required. It stays on the nails as long as a regular coat. In fact, it has less potential to chip off than the normal one. It comes off easily when removed with acetone remover.

Most matte nail polish brands have introduced a line of dark murky colors like forest green, blue-gray, jet black and purple. Exceptions to these are fuchsia and white by OPI and red by China Glaze. Some colors change their appearance under light, for instance Blue Suede by Orly's initially appears black, but then changes to a cool bluish-gray under light. Nail polish in matte finish for men is introduced by Man Glaze, in similar colors.

Nail polish in matte finish literally screams the word 'fashion'. It is certainly not subtle and hence, can seem inapt for formal occasions. Do not wear this nail polish to a job interview unless you are applying for an extremely creative position. If you decide to go for this one, make sure to keep your overall look balanced by underplaying other features.

Matte nail polish is bold, unique, stylish to some extent but it might not appear beautiful to some. So, go on and try it out if you are in the mood for a change and want to make a fashion statement.
