How to Make Homemade Makeup Primer
I had really been trying to get my hands on a makeup primer in my area. Seems like this city is not big on makeup and believe it or not, I couldn't find any primer from a good cosmetic brand here. Maybe the people at the beauty counters weren't so aware of what a makeup primer is! Anyway, I have always wanted to try primers. A primer can help in easy application of makeup by providing a base to it. It makes your makeup appear more polished and brings out its colors. Also, a primer can be of great help to all those girlfriends who have enlarged skin pores that can cause make up to look uneven and patchy. But, the only part I hate about primers is you get a lot less than you pay for and it gets over quickly. A homemade primer can help you save up on a lot of bucks from flying off your wallet every few months.
Homemade Makeup Primer from Concealer/Foundation
Here is an easy recipe that uses your concealer or foundation as a major ingredient for a base to make a primer for your makeup. All makeup artists swear by this recipe.
Things You Need:
- Liquid foundation or concealer
- Colorless/white/nude body butter or moisturizer
- Transparent aloe Vera gel (optional)
- Toothpick/brush
- Container
Put required quantity of your foundation or concealer in the container. Add equal parts of the body butter or a thick moisturizer. The moisturizer acts as an emollient and helps the makeup stick to the skin. When added to your foundation or concealer, it helps prevent creasing and drying out. Now, mix with a toothpick or the end of your makeup brush to dissolve lumps. Add more concealer to it if you want a better coverage for spots. I think, if you can get your hands on an aqueous cream, it would be great. It is a very well suited medicated cream for dry skin and doesn't leave it oily. You can add a few drops of aloe Vera gel to this recipe and make it skin nourishing. Aloe Vera will also give a matte finish to the skin. This recipe for works as good as expensive primers available at makeup counters. Also, keep it in the refrigerator to avoid its consistency from thinning. Plus, it will have a cooling effect on your skin when you apply it.
Natural Homemade Makeup Eye Primer
Things You Need
- 1 cup water
- A bottle of unflavored, unscented lip balm
- 0.5 g pure pigment
Boil the water while you put your lip balm in the microwave and set at 3-4 minutes. Use a separate container for the lip balm to heat. It should be microwave friendly. Add the pigment to the balm and stir. Now pour boiling water on top. Don't let lip balm solidify again. Strain out the extra water that doesn't mix with the lip balm from this solution. This works fine to prime your eyes. You can also use beeswax instead of the lip balm.
Other Alternatives
Aloe Vera Gel
Aloe Vera is a very good skin care product and can be used to treat many skin conditions like acne, burns and eczema. So, what could be better than applying some aloe Vera gel as a primer for your makeup?
Rice Powder
Some people use rice powder as a primer. It is a very popular ingredient of beauty regimes in oriental countries. It is now being used to manufacture mineral-makeup, too. To use rice powder as a face primer, mix a pinch with one tablespoon water and apply on skin.
Glycerin
Mix equal quantities of glycerin and water. Pour this mixture in a spray bottle or apply it with the help of a brush. Let the excess dry up and pat with tissue. Beware because this works well mostly as an eye primer and only for dry skin. It prevents the makeup from looking powdery or cakey.
Milk of Magnesia
Milk of magnesia works just as well as a natural makeup primer, especially for oily skin. It gives a matte finish and is a great skin food. Mix it with your daily moisturizer before applying makeup for best results.
Natural Waxes
This one can be a little complicated. Heat natural waxes with water and add mineral pigments in neutral shades to form a cream with a waxy texture. Use it as a primer.
Contact Lens Solution
Dab a little contact lens solution around your eyes. Then apply your eye shadows. It really helps bring out the color and this method is very economic.
Apart from these primer options, there is another product that can give you an instant glow. Although it cannot be used as a makeup, wear Pepto Bismol like a face pack for 20 minutes and then wash it off. It removes the top layer of dead skin cells off your skin. Also, since all the ingredients are natural, you do not have to worry about putting any chemicals on your skin that could harm its health. Just don't forget to wash that makeup off!
