How to Knot a Tie Easily

A tie or a necktie is a long strip of cloth with a narrow and a wide end that is worn around the neck, under the shirt collar for formal occasions. There are many other variations of the neck tie that serve a similar purpose in men's clothing. These include the bow tie, the bolo tie, and the Ascot tie. There are several men who find it extremely difficult to tie a tie. Here are some easy methods to knot a tie.

Knotting a Tie Easily

One of the easiest ways is to knot it into a four-in-hand knot. Most novices to the art of knotting a necktie swear by the ease of this method when learning to knot a tie. Just follow the simple instructions given here.

  • Put the tie around your neck with the thinner end on the left side and wider end on your right side.
  • Pull the wider end of the tie so that the end of the tie lies at least 12 inches below the narrow end.
  • Now take the wide end of the tie and cross it over the narrow end and then pull it back from underneath the narrow end.
  • Next take the wider end of the tie and pass it over the front of the narrow end of the tie. This will enable the creation of a loop through which you will need to pass the wide end of the tie.
  • Now hold the knot that has been thus created very loosely in your hand and pass the wide end through the loop again in the front. The narrower end of the tie will function as a tightening mechanism.
These instructions on knotting a tie is for one of the easiest methods. Given below in the next section are some more methods that you can use to tie a tie which is a clothing item that is a staple of formal wear for men.

Ways to Knot a Tie

Given below are three very simple ways to learn how to knot a tie; the Half Windsor, Windsor, and Pratt. Let us take a look at these three methods.

Half Windsor Knot
  • To tie a tie with this knot you need to hold the wider end of the tie in your right hand, with it extending to a length of 12 inches below the narrow end just as in the four-in-hand knot.
  • Next you need to cross the wider end over the narrower end of the tie and wrap it around taking it behind and creating a loop.
  • Now pull the wide end of the tie through the loop from the upper side and take it to the right.
  • Now again bring it to the front of the tie and take it over the narrower end of the tie creating another loop.
  • Now take the wide end through this loop and through the knot after which you can tighten the knot and smoothen it out.
Windsor Knot
  • To learn the Windsor knot, you need to hold the wider end of the tie in your right hand with it extending to a length of 12 inches below the narrow end. Now as in the case of other knots explained earlier while tying a Windsor knot as well, you will have to cross the wider end of the tie over the narrower end.
  • Now the wide end of the tie needs to be pulled through the loop that has been created, first upwards and then back downwards.
  • Pull the wider end of the tie under the narrower end, towards the right and again through the loop to the right again. Ensure that the wider end of the tie is inside out.
  • Now pull the wider end of the tie from right to left across the front, pull it up through the loop again and then pull it through the knot in the front. Now tighten the knot by pulling the narrow end of the tie.
Pratt Knot
  • Holding the tie inside out, let the wider end of the tie be 12 inches below the narrower end which should be on the left.
  • Now let the wide end of the tie cross under the narrower end of the tie. Now take it over the narrower end and then under again.
  • Next take the wider end of the tie through a loop that has been created and pull it down to tighten it. Take it to the right and then pull the wide end up from behind the loop.
  • Pull the wide end through the loop and tighten the noose.
These were just some of the easy ways to learn to knot a tie. There are many other methods out there. Once you have made the knot of a tie, you can always loosen it and remove it in such a manner that the tie does not have to be knotted every time but this is only if you find tie knotting a cumbersome task. Otherwise using one of these easy ways to tie a tie, you can knot it every time you need to wear one.
