How Much Does Botox Cost
Botox is the popular name for botulinum toxin, which is a neurotoxic protein synthesized by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Botox is used to treat conditions like muscle spasms, misaligned eyes (strabismus), blepharospasm or uncontrollable blinking, and cervical dystonia. However, botox is more popular for its effectiveness in reducing or smoothening facial wrinkles and fine lines.
How Pricey is Botox?
Usually, $10 to $18 is charged for one unit of botox. Note that the number of units required would depend on the area that is to be injected. Sometimes, as many as 50 units of botox can be required to be injected in a single visit.
In general, the average cost of botox can be somewhere around $300 to $600 per session. But at times, the cost can go up to $1,200 as well.
The price may also depend upon the area which is to be treated like if you go for forehead then the average cost may be $780 to $880.
A Few Pointers...
Usually, a plastic surgeon or a dermatologist charges a higher price for administering botox than a nurse.
Even geographical location can affect the price of botox.
Moreover, certain areas of the face may require more than just one injection of botox, in such case, the cost can go up.
So the cost of botox cost depends on your specific needs, the professional who is administering the injections, the number of injections required, and also the area where you are planning to get the treatment.
Some Info on Botox Treatment
The cosmetic effect of botox or botulinum toxin type A was first documented by Dr. Richard Clark, a plastic surgeon from California. In 2002, FDA approved botox for cosmetic use. Presently, botox is used as an anti-aging treatment to improve the appearance of wrinkles and frown lines. Botox is administered through injections. The area to be injected is first cleaned with a non-alcohol cleanser like, Betadine. After cleaning, topical anesthetic is applied and then the injections are given. Botox weakens the muscles and limits their contractions, which is why the muscles appear relaxed after giving the botox injections. Botulinum toxin actually inhibits the neural transmission between the nerve endings and the muscle fibers, as a result of which the muscles weaken and look more relaxed or rested. People within the age group of 18 to 65 years can opt for this cosmetic procedure. The effect of botox is however, temporary and can last for four to six months.
The cost of this cosmetic procedure can be too high at times. Additionally, the effect is not permanent, which means you have to go for it again after a couple of months. Another important point to be noted is the side effect of botox. Botox is the same toxin that causes botulism. However, the usual side effects of botox are not very severe. One can expect localized pain, inflammation, tenderness, swelling and redness at the site of injection, along with nausea, eyelid drooping and flu like symptoms. All these factors need to be taken into account before opting for botox. To understand all about botox including its effects, cost and complications, it is better to have a talk with your dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon.
