Foods that Make you Bloated


Bloating is a condition which many of us experience after eating. Bloating can be termed as a kind of abnormal, general swelling, or an increase in size of waist. A person suffering from bloating feels a filled and tight abdomen. There can be various reasons for bloating but the foods that you consume are the first culprits. There are certain kinds of foods that you cannot digest. As a result you experience gas and bloating, which can lead to burping and flatulence. To avoid all these embarrassing situations it is better that you avoid consuming foods that make you bloated.

List of Foods that Make You Feel Bloated

There are a number of foods that cause bloating and are consumed by all of us daily. Many such super-foods are essential for our body, but they also cause a little discomfort. So, what should be done? The key is to eat everything but in small quantities. Here are some names of foods to avoid that make you bloated.

Greasy Foods
Burgers, French fries, fried chicken and pizzas are some popular examples of greasy and fried foodstuffs. These foods are cooked in oil and it takes the stomach a long time to break the fats and digest them properly. In this extra time, gas is built up which causes bloating.

Fruits and vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are considered as happy and healthy foods. But some of them can cause bloating and gas. Some vegetables and fruits are rich in sugar and fiber content which causes the formation of gas in the stomach. Vegetables include dried peas, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, onions, artichokes, asparagus and beans. Fruits which can cause bloating are peaches, pears, prunes and apples. Such fruits contain a type of sugar called sorbitol which is a prime cause of bloating and gas.

High Sodium Content Foods
One of the prime reasons for bloating is salt. Foods which have high amounts of salt like canned soup or soda causes the body to retain water which directly results in bloating.

Artificial Sweeteners
Soft drinks, candy, chewing gum and various other stuffs which have a high quantity of sugar are examples of foods that make you bloated. Artificial sweeteners can lead to indigestion, bloating or even Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Artificial sweeteners such as saccharin, sorbitol, xylitol, maltitol, mannitol, cyclamates, aspartame and sucralose stick to the stomach because they cannot be digested and after a while it transform into hydrogen gas.

Dairy Products
Milk and other dairy products are rich in lactose a type of natural sugar. Lactose in milk is difficult to break down, as a result it causes bloating and gas.

Carbonated Drinks
We all are big fans of carbonated drinks. But they are one of the biggest cause of major stomach problems. Tonic water, club soda have a high content of carbon-di-oxide trapped in the form of bubbles in them. These bubbles create excessive gas and bloating and sometimes major indigestion problems.

Alcohol
A lot of alcoholic drinks have a high content of sugar in them. Alcohol when consumed gives a heavy feeling on the stomach because formation of alcohol is a result of various bacterial actions.
