Hair Care: Common Hair Myths

Hair Care: Common Hair Myths

  • Speaking about hair myths, the first person who crops up in my mind was this colleague at work, who would always turn up late! Her excuse was always the same; she had to wash her hair on an everyday basis to keep them looking good and healthy. This is definitely a myth; washing your hair everyday does not really make it strong. In fact, every person should shampoo only when necessary. Washing it everyday may tend to weaken the hair; therefore this routine would be highly dependent upon your hair texture.
  • Well, this is one common hair myth; probably heard since my childhood days-cutting hair frequently makes it grow faster. Hair that grows on the head is different from body hair; both have different properties. Therefore, cutting your hair every month is not going to increase the growth remarkably.
  • I came across this one in the Malory Towers by Enid Blyton, where the character Gwendoline often brushed her hair till it shone. Well, I don't know about Gwendoline, but constant brushing of the hair is not really beneficial for your tresses. It can lead to hair breakage and cause the hair to weaken.
  • This is another common hair myth that one may have heard and follows arduously till date -pulling out a strand of gray hair will cause three more to grow. Generally, a hair can be pulled out from the root causing no effect to the root except weakening it; a root cannot split and produce more gray hair. When the body has begun the graying process, it is natural more hair roots will tend to produce gray hair instead of the former color.
  • Split ends can be repaired with the use of conditioners! Well, that's a complete line of bull. Maybe the advertising campaign and the beautifully packaged bottle says that the conditioner will help to prevent split ends, the right cure for them would be to get a hair trim done. There are some hair products in the market that can temporarily merge split ends together but I would advise you to visit your beauty salon and go for that much-needed trim.
  • Using hair dryers causes hair loss-well, if the use is on an everyday basis and there is too much heat caused by the dryer then you may face this problem at times. But it does not always mean the use of a hair dryer will definitely cause hair loss.
  • Some myths also include a connection between dry scalps and dandruff. Well, dandruff can be a result of many different circumstances, besides dandruff flakes are actually oily and using strong shampoos can sometimes heighten the problem, rather than solving it for you. Having a dry scalp does not always mean you will end up dandruff.
  • Shampoos that lather well are often in demand amongst most women. Well, the general feeling is that a shampoo that lathers well, will give a feeling of having shining and squeaky-clean hair to the user. Lather has actually no connection with the shampoos cleaning abilities. (Surprised? To think you actually gave that shampoo away to your pesky neighbor!
When it comes to hair care, it is best to be well informed rather than believing fables that you come across along the way. Good hair care routines and proper healthy habits can help you have lustrous and shiny hair, forever!
