The Budget

Don't even start shopping before you know what the budget is like. I understand that this is all very overwhelming for you but trust me, you'll soon get the hang of it. Why does the budget have to be a part of the grocery list for college students? Because without a budget you'll only end up buying things that you don't really need and things that just seem fancy or attractive at first glance. Ever noticed how you end up picking absolute junk when you're hungry and out shopping? I rest my case. So then, let's save ourselves some money and learn how to budget.

Understand that a budget should be prepared according to what suits your needs and is right for you and that will come about after some form of experimenting and knowing what is working for you and what is getting into an excess figure. Follow these steps to understand how to plan a budget.

  • Use a notebook to write down each and everything that you end up buying. And by everything, I mean - everything.
  • Do this for about a week and you'll know what your pattern is like. Whether you end up buying a particular item everyday or not.
  • This will then help you determine a budget because you'll know that you need to keep a calculated amount aside for a particular item.
  • Similarly all other items will also fall into the same way.
  • Once you have a tentative budget planned, try and stick to it. But see if there are any changes that have to be made to include items that you might have left off or forgotten, but while shopping you realize that you need them.
  • After a couple of shopping trips you'll realize what is working for you and what your average college shopping grocery bill is like. Based on that you can change certain things here and there to exclude a few and include a few items.
  • Also, look for some grocery stores that have grocery coupons that will help you to save money further.
  • Now try and stick to that budget as best as possible to keep your resources under control.
