Kindle
There are several companies which make e-book readers and one of the most popular among them is Amazon's Kindle. It was launched on November 19, 2007 for $399. Amazon followed it up by launching two more devices, known as KindleDX and Kindle3. The Kindle3 has two versions, Kindle Wi-Fi and Kindle 3G. WI-Fi and 3G enable you to buy books through Kindle itself. The process of buying books is really simple and doesn't take too much time. The Kindle3 is the latest e-book reader from the Kindle family. It has got a 6 inch screen and the clarity doesn't fade even in direct sunlight. It has got a good battery life with which you can easily read books for a week or so. The resolution is of 600 x 800 pixels and the internal memory is 4GB. It has garnered a positive feedback in most of the wireless reading device reviews. Some of the drawbacks that this device has is reading pdf files is not easy and to upload your personal documents, you need to first upload them on Amazon, pay a fee and then use it from there. The Amazon Kindle 3 is priced at $139 for the Wi-Fi version, and $189 for the 3G version.
Sony E-Book Readers
Before we go ahead and discuss the technicalities of Sony's e-book readers, we must appreciate their timeless design. Among all the devices, Sony's devices stand for the sheer brilliance in which they have been designed. Its design has been given thumbs-up by most reviewers. We have the Reader Touch Edition, the Reader daily Edition and the Reader Pocket Edition. Popular among these are the Sony PRS-300 and the Sony PRS-350. Then we also have the Sony PRS-900 edition which is one of the favorites with many e-book readers with its intuitive touchscreen technology. It comes with a resolution of 600 1024 pixels and an internal memory of 2 GB (Expendable to 32GB with SDHC). It is compatible with PDF, PDB, ePUB, eReader. The range Sony has to offer is great, so if you are a bit confused about which one is suitable for you, you can possibly decide what exactly you need the e-book reader for. If you just want to replace your paperbacks with an e-book reader you can go for the Sony Pocket Edition. If you fancy touch-screen devices, Sony Touch Edition can be the one for you. And finally, the Sony Daily Edition is quite useful for reading daily newspapers.
Barnes and Noble Nook
The Nook also offers the readers all the standard features one expects from e-book readers these days, additionally having a unique color, and touchscreen navigation. You can also download the latest books using AT&T's wireless internet or the Wi-Fi. The display screen is the 16- level gray-scale. Nook like Kindle 3 has a resolution of 600 x 800 pixels and the internal memory is 2 GB (which is of course expandable). Well Nook also allows its users to "lend" books amongst themselves and this is one feature which gives Nook a slight edge over its competitors. Nook uses e-pub ,which is an open e-book data format that enables you to move titles between units. Barnes and Noble have a formidable store support having around 600 retailers and 35000 retail advisers. The price for Nook e-book in the market is around $260.
BeBook Neo
BeBook Neo is manufactured by the Dutch company Ideas BV. It comes with a 6-inch screen with a decent quality. The Neo also comes with the Wi-Fi technology which enables you to download books instantly. So those who are not too concerned about the e-book being a touch-screen, can go for Neo. One thing that can put potential buyers off is the price, with prices varying from $350 to $450.
iRiver Story
Well, iRiver Story is a rather new entrant in this field, but the manufacturers of iRiver have done a good job in making this device quite attractive and classy. iRiver Story is compatible with a wide range of e-book formats including: EPUB, PDF & TXT. But at around $360 it is among the more expensive ones out there. It has the same 6 inch screen that most of the e-book readers have to offer and user interface is intuitive, you can use the keypad to navigate through the menus.
Wireless reading devices can be a boon for an avid reader. What portable music players have done to music, e-book readers can do the same for books. That is, get more people reading. So let's welcome it in our lives.
