Oily Scalp Treatment


Hair care is an important part of beauty regimen. While some are annoyed and irritated by their dry and brittle hair, some others have oily scalp, which pose problems. As compared to other hair conditions, an oily scalp is considered the most problematic one, especially for people with long hair. People with this type of scalp often land in dilemma, as daily use of shampoo may make the hair dry, whereas an application of conditioners makes the scalp oily within a few hours.

How to Treat an Oily Scalp?

If you want immediate relief from the condition, you can go for medicated creams or shampoos. Shampoos with coal tar, zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide or salicylic acid, as ingredients are found to be beneficial as oily scalp treatment. These products slow down the process of death and regeneration of skin cells in the scalp, which in turn reduces dandruff, inflammation and itching. Some of them may even fight the fungi that cause the oiliness of the scalp. It has been observed that shampoos with or other hair care products with salicylic acid reduces the oil in the scalp considerably. Apply these shampoos on the scalp and let it sit for around five minutes, before rinsing off. Rinse off well and, if you have long hair, which is prone to dryness, due to the shampoo, then apply a good conditioner at the hair tips only.

Apply fresh lemon juice on your scalp and leave it for at least 20 minutes, before rinsing it off thoroughly. Coconut milk is also good for the scalp massage. Use fresh coconut milk extracted from coconut shavings to massage the scalp and rinse it thoroughly. Tea tree oil is very effective for relief from oily scalp. It can strip excess oil and also helps fight dandruff. Sage can dissolve built-in oil deposits on the scalp and so, is considered effective in oily scalp treatment. Eucalyptus oil regulates the natural oil production of the scalp and helps in reducing inflammation and itching. Aloe vera juice and egg white are also good for such scalp condition.

But it is always recommended to seek the opinion of your doctor, before taking any herbal products or before using medicated products. If you have an oily scalp, avoid using hot water to rinse the hair, as it can increase oil production in the scalp. Go for cool water, which helps to close the pores and reduce the oil production. Use hair care products meant for oily hair and skip conditioners. If you have long hair, apply small amounts of conditioner on the hair tips (lower ends). Avoid oily and fatty foods, and consume lots of fruits and vegetables and drink lots of water. A combination of all these measures can be the best oily scalp treatment.
