While stains caused by fountain pen ink may not be that difficult to remove, those caused by permanent markers can be a real challenge. Likewise, ink stains on leather or silk can be really tough to remove. This article will provide you with information about ink stain removal from leather.

As mentioned above, the nature of the ink stain may vary with the type of ink as well as the type of leather. So, the right ink stain removal method will be required to tackle different types of stains. In general, leather is a porous material that can absorb stains at a very fast rate. Ink is primarily a dye than can stain leather easily. So, the combination of ink and leather can be deadly and tough to separate. But, what if the stains are caused by permanent ink or if the leather is a very expensive one like pigmented leather, smooth leather, suede or aniline leather. In such cases, it is always better to contact a professional for removing ink stains on leather. In some cases, the manufacturer of the leather product may provide some instructions for stain removal, along with some cleaning solutions. In such cases, you have to follow those instructions. You may also approach the manufacturer, for the right stain removal methods. There are various other methods that can be tried at home, for ink stain removal from leather.
How to Remove Ink Stains from Leather?
In fact, removing stains from leather, particularly ink stains, can be a real tough task. As in case of any other stain, the faster you act, the chances of removing ink from leather are higher. In other words, removal of fresh ink stains is easier, as compared to dried ones. So, act fast and blot out the ink spill with a soft clean cloth, in a gentle manner. Blot from the outer areas towards the center of the stain, so as to prevent the ink from spreading. Once you wipe out the extra ink, you can try the ink stain removal methods. Another important thing is that whatever cleaning solution you use for ink stain removal from leather, try it on some inconspicuous spot beforehand. If the solution is found to be effective and not causing any damage to the leather, then only proceed with it. Take a look at the following methods that can be useful to remove ink stain from leather purse, jacket, couch, etc.
- Rubbing alcohol is found to be somewhat effective in ink stain removal from leather. All you have to do is soak a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol and dab it on the stains. Use a soft and clean white cloth to blot out the ink. If the stain on your leather is gone, wipe off the area with cool water and apply a leather conditioner to retain the texture of the leather.
- Some people use other materials, like petroleum jelly or hair spray so as to remove ink stain from leather furniture and other such products. Petroleum jelly is applied on the stains, after blotting the ink. Keep it like that for a few days, after which, you have to wipe off the petroleum jelly. Even hair spray has to be applied on the stains, after blotting them. Leave the spray on the stains for a few minutes, before wiping with a clean cloth. Once again wipe with a clean damp cloth. Apply leather conditioner.

There are many such products, like leather cleaning solutions, leather stain removal products, ink sticks, gels, leather wipes, etc. use these products as per the manufacturer's instructions. It will be better to use soap-based cleansers to remove ink stain from leather couch and other leather products.
