Colored Diamond Engagement Rings

Diamonds are composed entirely of crystallized carbon molecules, and are formed under intense heat and pressure 150 kilometers deep within the Earth's crust. Diamonds have been in use since time immemorial, either as jewelry or just fine cut individual pieces. It is also the hardest substance found on the planet, besides being a woman's best friend.

Natural colored diamonds are extremely rare and expensive. It is believed that, for every one colored diamond found, there are nearly 10,000 colorless ones. The natural process of geographical formation and conditions that add color to the diamonds ensures that each one of them is unique in color, form and size. The interaction of elements like nitrogen, boron, etc., with carbon atoms during diamond creation, add or at times even changes the color of the diamond. Radiation and pressure on a diamond's structure also plays a part in imparting color to it.

Some of the colors that can be found are:

  1. Blue: The presence of boron imparts a blue shade.
  2. Violet: The presence of hydrogen produces violet hues.
  3. Yellow/Orange: The presence of nitrogen imparts yellow or orange shades.
  4. Red/ Pink/ Purple/ Brown: The amount of pressure exerted on a diamond in the Earth's crust abnormally compresses its structure, imparting colors and shades of red, pink, purple or brown.
As diamonds with color are rare and expensive, color enhanced diamonds were introduced into the market to make it affordable for the general masses. The process of irradiation is used to color natural colorless diamonds. The natural diamonds are subjected to high energy particles in a laboratory, which is how color is added to them.
