The discovery of LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) by Albert Hoffman in 1938 led to the psychedelic art movement. Creation of art in the altered state of consciousness is roughly defined as the psychedelic art. The psychedelic art is very much similar to the Surrealist movement in many aspects. It is the process of drawing inspiration from the mental state of hallucination. Visual arts were the manifestations of such altered state of mind along with literary works of Andre Masson and Remedios Varo. The authors/writers involved in the Surrealist movement contributed largely to the psychedelic artworks. Most notable of the literary works were Journey to the land of Tarahumara by Antonin Artaud. The experiences related to hashish and mascaline were presented by Henri Michaux in his book, the Miserable Miracle.

Trippy art is one of the most important forms of visual and literary arts of today's times. One can reach the depths of his mental state and layers through this art form. It is necessary to explore as much as possible to bring out the best in terms of quality and trueness of our experiences. It is said that visual art or artists should think more about giving a real or 'day-to-day life' kind of a look to their creations. However, it necessary to understand that depicting the present state of mind and expressing the true experiences is most important. Thus, one should remain honest to himself/herself and contribute to the psychedelic art.
