Retail Store Manager: Job Description and Duties

A retail store manager is supposed to work with several division heads and the manager himself has to report to area representative from the central office. Since teamwork is important, the manager needs to have good communication skills. He has to interact with customers and employees.

Generally, goods for the retail stores are purchased by the central buying office. The manager is supposed to order only through the central office. The manager keeps the record of sold goods and orders the goods by filling book keeping forms or sales reports electronically with the help of a computer. So he or she needs to be an expert in book keeping and computer operating.

Apart from keeping a watch on sales, the manager has to control all the day-to-day processes that are carried out in the store. These include display of goods, allotting the duties to the members in his sales team, managing the number of employees (when someone is on leave; or hiring efficient new team members when some employees leave), supervising, imparting training to the new team members, etc. The manager is responsible for occupational safety and employee relations within the store.

The most important thing is that the manager is held responsible for the money that comes into the store and goes out of the store. Apart from handling the cash, he is responsible for customer satisfaction. When it comes to 'customer service', the manager has to look into each and every matter. Moreover, attracting consumers and clients is one of the important duties of a retail store manager. The manager needs to have perfect knowledge of advertising and promotional displays. He is expected to help the divisional heads in designing the policies and strategies which are likely to attract customers and increase profits. So while checking the store inventory, the manager has to find out the primary demands of the customers.

Knowing various languages can be quite beneficial if you want to be a store manager. A professional store manager takes care of the customers and profits. He also motivates other employees in the store to work hard. Employee motivation plays an important role in the career of the retail store manager. The manager should be balanced minded, he should know when to be rigid and when to be flexible with both the customers and employees. All these qualities actually help in life.
