Knitting Patterns for Babies and Toddlers

There is nothing more wonderful than knitting a handmade sweater, sock, cap or cardigan for a newborn baby. If you or a family member is expecting a baby, then you might consider homemade knitted items as a good gift. These are required by babies to keep them warm in the winters. Some of the knitting patterns for baby clothes are easy and simple and are ideal for beginners. Others are a little complicated and might require a lot of time and effort as well as clear knowledge of advanced knitting techniques. Regardless of the knitting pattern you choose, a hand knitted piece of baby clothing, made with a lot of love and care will always be greatly appreciated.

Easy Knitting Patterns for Babies

Baby Bonnet
Baby bonnets are an essential item in a baby's wardrobe. You can make cool and cute baby bonnets with 1 skein of white wool, pink satin ribbons and a pair of no.14 knitting needles. Start by knitting 15 stitches with the wool. Now knit back 14 rows to form 7 ridges. After this increase each row by 1 stitch so that there are 33 stitches. Again knit 28 rows. Now decrease each row by one stitch and then knit 40 rows. Pick up a single stitch in each ridge starting from the bottom. Again knit 8 ridges. Turn this border over on bonnet, and hold it in place with ribbons.

Baby Scarf
A cabled scarf will keep a toddler warm during chilly winters. To make this cabled scarf, you will need two skeins of medium weight alpaca/wool blend in blue color, one pair of size 10 circular needles and 16-inch cable needle. First cast on 60 inches and join in round. Now on each round work first 5 stitches in reverse stockinette stitch by doing the purl on every row. Follow this by 20 stitches done in a cable pattern, and the next 10 stitches in reverse stockinette. Repeat this process and end with 5 final stitches in reverse stockinette. After you are done for about 32 inches, bind off. Weave in the ends of the cable scarf and sew both the top and bottom part of the scarf, making sure that the cables are in the center on each side.

Baby Mittens
Baby mittens are so very cute and are perfect to keep baby's hands all warm and toasty. To begin, first cast on 20 stitches and then distribute evenly over 3 needles, join round, and mark beginning. Knit 1 row and then increase 3 stitches on each row after that. Continue in this way until you have about 6 inches of it. Now pick up 7 stitches from the end and pick up 5 stitches from each sides. Arrange the stitches evenly on needles. Now knit 7 rows. Finish by breaking the yarn, and thread through all the remaining stitches and pull tight. Knitting mittens might seem like a complicated project, but once you get the knack, you can do it very quickly.

Knitting for babies and small children is a lot of fun and these projects are not time-consuming either. Knitting patterns for baby blankets are a good starting point for those of you who are new to it. There are many other baby clothes that you can make by knitting once you know some of the basic knitting techniques. Happy knitting!
