How to Build a Bookcase
If you are a voracious reader and you have a great collection of books, you will surely need information on how to build a bookcase. Do devote some time to build a bookcase as per your needs. This is the best way to keep your books in a good condition for a long time. If you are good at carpentry, you will enjoy it even more. However, you need to decide the bookcase design, layout and size of the bookcase. Try to be innovative and it might just turn out to be a great home decorating idea. Here's all the information on things you need to build a bookcase step by step.
Building a Bookcase
Things You Require
- Plywood
- 2 lumbers
- Saw
- Hammer and nails
- Sandpaper
- Paint
- Screwdriver
- 4 L-shaped brackets
- A thin piece of plywood
- Brads
- Screws
Before you start building the bookcase, you must ensure that you have a piece of lumber that measures 2 inches in length, 10 inches in breadth and 12 inches in height. Another piece of lumber measuring 2 inches lengthwise, 10 inches in breadth and 8 inches in height has to be cut into three sections, all measuring 32 inches.
- The first step involves the cutting of the lumber piece that measures 2"x10"x12". This piece of lumber has to be cut into two equal pieces. These pieces make the sides of the bookcase, so ensure that you cut the pieces as per the requirement.
- Now we need pieces for the top and bottom sections and the shelves in between. For this, you would need the 32 inch sections that were cut from the lumber piece earlier.
- Use the sandpaper on the edges of the board to smoothen them.
- All the boards and the plywood needs to be painted well.
- Next a little planning is involved regarding the space between the shelves. Mark after taking a look at the size of the books.
- Remember the L brackets? You need to attach and align them in a manner as per the layout you have decided. If your books are heavy, make sure you choose the size that can support that kind of weight. You will need to fasten the L brackets to the top shelf and along both the sides of the bookcase.
- Refer to the layout and attach the shelves where you want them to be. Be innovative as well as practical and make sure you pay attention to the spacing factor.
- To ensure that the bookcase color looks uniform, it would be worthwhile to paint the L brackets in the same color as that of the bookcase.
- The next step is to use the brads to attach the plywood at the back of your bookcase.
- If you are wondering how to build a bookcase with doors, you will need to check whether a door could fit in or not.
- If there is enough place for a door to fit in, start taking measurements.
- Make sure you select the same quality of wood for the door.
- You will need to get hold of hinges and door knobs.
- Drill holes for the screws and screw the hinges to the door.
